Playing with Shadows and Light

This is photo idea 2 of 8 for a small-town photo tour and is about capturing shadows, but it is also all about the light. When you are trying to capture shadows, you can’t help but notice the light.

Shadows and Light

Continuing the theme of last week’s post here are some settings I lean toward for this topic:

Mode:
Choose either Manual Mode or Aperture Priority. Both choices allow you to have control over the aperture setting which is the key for this assignment.

Aperture:
For shadows with sharp lines, I want to get a higher aperture setting such as F8.0 - F11 to get a deeper depth of field. As with the leading line recommendation, higher may be better for a sharper edge for long shadows.

ISO:
Try to keep the ISO low for better color and avoid noise that is present in photos shot with a high ISO.

Shutter Speed:
Will be automatic in aperture priority mode. In manual mode use shutter speed to adjust exposure to support the desired aperture

Focal Length:
Your choice to frame the composition to include tell a story with the shadows - maybe the shadow can be your leading lines as well.
